When We're Singin'

Partridge Family TV Show

A Tribute to Executive Producer Bob Claver

Partridge Family TV ShowJohn Miller1 Comment

During the month of December, and only weeks after the passing of David Cassidy, Partridge Family Executive Producer Bob Claver quietly passed away after a brave battle with Alzheimer’s. He was a huge supporter of When We're Singin', and I'd like to share a few words about this great man who gave the world of entertainment many, many great television programs.

Bob Claver 5 courtesy of Nancy Witherell.jpg

After my very first interview with Shirley Jones she told me that I needed to speak with Bob Claver. She said he was a great producer and she had a terrific relationship with him because he always dealt with everyone so fairly and with such professionalism. She said she had worked with a lot of producers through the years and they were not all like that. When I spoke with Bob, he had the same kind of respect for Shirley. He felt very close to Shirley through those years and off camera they shared a great friendship, supporting each other in their personal lives as well. Their ability to unite, to be a team and to teach the young actors how to stick together, is something that made a great impression on me.

Bob was my third or fourth interview for When We’re Singin.’ I had watched an archival interview with him beforehand, and I was really excited (and really nervous!) to have the chance to speak with him.

He was extremely knowledgeable and articulate about his life in the business and his time on The Partridge Family. The quality I remember most about him was his straight forward nature in answering every question with precise detail. He was a listener too, and he picked up on a few comments I made about my own life early in the conversation and brought them back into the dialog at the very end. I noticed it, and it felt really nice. It was a certain nod of approval that I cherish to this day, and will always remember.

It was Bob Claver’s daughter, Nancy, who initially connected me with her father for the interview. Shortly afterwards Nancy together with her father, became backers for the book, supporting the Kickstarter campaign and everything that went into the book’s publication.

During the campaign, Bob signed 25 bookmarks that were used to help raise funds. He even offered to sign copies of the book for all those who purchased it through the campaign, but sadly the Altzheimer’s had begun to set in and take hold by the time the book was printed.

Nancy cared for her father all through the run of that horrible disease, and when he passed in December 2017, she sent me a very thoughtful note, as my own mother had passed from dementia in June 2016, six months before the publication of the book.

I felt a certain kinship with Nancy through those last few years. She and her father became people I could call friends. Nancy told me that at one point when the disease was getting bad, she was reading passages from the book to him, and she could see him nod and smile with approval over the words chosen to represent him and his memories of that period in his life. That warmed my heart.

Bob actually began his career on Captain Kangaroo, a show many of us watched as young children—a show that influenced us to be kind to one another, gentle and caring. If only there were more shows like that on TV today. Thanks to Bob Claver, we had one of the best.

His experience on that show and his passion for kids carried through in everything he did, and anyone who watches The Partridge Family can see that the Executive Producer, Bob Claver, had his pulse, influence and control over every line and every script ever produced for that show.

I remember him telling me that they did an episode about Danny thinking he was adopted, and it scared children across the nation. It was the only show that received letters of concern, and for some time it was not included in the syndicated reruns. He was sad by this because, he said, it didn’t produce the kind of feelings for children that he believed in. He didn’t like the idea of anyone—child or adult—feeling confused about their family identity.

The Partridge Family was also known for tackling topical issues of the day—racial prejudice, religion, environment to name a few, and Bob was particularly proud of those episodes because he felt they made a positive difference in the lives of children. He cared very much about their sensitivities.

We lost a show business legend when we lost Bob Claver, and I hope that you will all say a silent prayer for him, for Nancy and for the rest of his loving family left behind. —Johnny Ray Miller

While my wishes come weeks after the ball has dropped in Times Square,....Happy New Year to everyone! I hope the fresh new year is bringing plenty of joy to you all.

Shipp played THE FLASH in the original 80s version, in addition to his role on the series currently airing on the CW. Gary Busey, Alice Cooper, and Barbara Eden are all on the list of the many others who plan on attending. It should be a fun weekend for all. We're off to print!

After a long week of Kristina, Donna and I working nearly round the clock, the book went to print earlier today!

I'd like to thank all of you for your extraordinary patience. I, too, never dreamed how much time it would take for this project to complete, but I can tell you this: It is because of YOU, the fans, that this book has finally made it's way to reality. Because of YOU, the book was controlled by a group of professionals who care enough to release the best possible book on The Partridge Family and their music, filled with the kinds of detailed information fans have wanted for years and years.

Check out the final artwork for the book cover!

Check out the final artwork for the book cover!

The 64 page color photo section is also another extraordinary accomplishment. Rarely does a book like this see a full color section in the middle, let alone 64 pages!  But YOU wanted it, and YOU funded it and that is testament to the passion we all share for the music of The Partridge Family.

I am thankful that avenues such as Kickstarter exist today, making it possible for all of us to speak, and to act on what we want. There is no publisher on the planet who would have released a book as thorough and elaborate as this, and it all happened because of you.

In the coming days and weeks, I will be here, telling you more about the book and its contents. I thank you again, wholeheartedly, for your support, your patience, and most of all, your undying love for all things Partridge!

RELEASE DATE:

On December 9, 2016, "When We're Singin' - The Partridge Family & Their Music" will be officially released! The book (originally planned for 410 pages) is a whopping 504 pages with the 64-page color photo section taking it to a grand total of 568 pages!

"When We're Singin'" is a LIMITED EDITION hard back, available exclusively through the website, WhenWereSingin.com. "You can pre-order When We're Singin'" in time for Christmas by going to the link on the website now!

Be sure to sign up for the "daily blog" to receive updates that will come directly to your email inbox!  I will be back to share more information and exciting details during the days and weeks to come!

The Final Countdown!

Hi gang!

I'm ready to begin the final countdown with all of you, as we are now getting very close to the actual release date!

David Cassidy concert promo 2.jpg

Some updates for you:

While the photo section has been done, the actual layout of the book, the design, was done in early June. BUT...

...we ended up about 50 pages over budget. So I have spent countless hours with our amazing editor, Donna Spencer, determining what we can do to bring the page count down a bit. After long discussions, rather than sacrificing pertinent information contained in the extra pages (which would have needed to be cut in order to fit), our designer is going to reformat the book, and lay it out all over again for the second time. I suspect this process will take about a week. Donna will be working on final edits this coming week before it goes to the designer.

I'm going to begin sharing with you, a countdown to release, because I think it will be fun to share the excitement of the book's arrival, together. I know it has been six months longer than originally anticipated, but rest assured that the reasons lay in the careful focus on detail and content.

I will be back with you at least weekly from now until release, if not more frequently.

On another note, all backers have all been listed on the website as funders of this project, and I sent out a survey over a month ago through the Kickstarter update program asking for any corrections to your names, spellings, things like that. There are still several people who haven't responded, so if you are a backer, would you please go to the backer list on this site and take a look at your names and make sure it is listed to your satisfactory. Any further edits have to be submitted by Tuesday of this week if we are going to make them. You can email me at JohnnyRayMiller1@gmail.com.

Thanks again for your patience. I'll be back very shortly with a countdown of events!

THIS JUST IN! - 'Partridge Family' Executive Producer Bob Claver offers to sign books!

1970s, David Cassidy, Kickstarter, Partridge Family Music, Partridge Family TV ShowJohn MillerComment

I just received an email from Executive Producer Bob Claver, and he has offered to sign books for anyone who buys the book exclusively through THIS CAMPAIGN!  He will autograph them and personally inscribe them to YOU!

When you receive your book in December, you can then send it to Bob and he will sign it, AND he has offered to pay for the return postage!  This is an INCREDIBLY kind gesture!  This offer is good for everyone who has already pledged for the book, and ALL NEWCOMERS who pledge before the campaign ends! But hurry, because you only have 24 hours left! The campaign ends Sunday night, May 31 at 10PM (EST.) The retail cost of the book has not been set yet, but it will not cost any less than pledging for it here in the campaign, so don't miss out on this! These books are certain to become highly collectible.

If you recall, Bob Claver began his career on "Captain Kangaroo," and he is especially proud to have  produced TV programs like "The Partridge Family" that had a positive influence on children.

Bob was one of the first five interviews I conducted in the fall of 2010, just after speaking with Shirley Jones. He spent well over 2 hours with me on the telephone, and left the door open for more. He is an incredibly kind and caring man, and his family is the same.

Wow...talk about "getting happy!"

24 hours to go!

"Whale Song" was one of the rare times Shirley Jones sang solo on the show, and certainly the most memorable. It has become one of the most-requested unreleased songs. The story behind "Whale Song" is also one of the most intriguing stories behind any of the Partridge Family songs! Guaranteed to surprise and engage!

Thank you, my good friends, supporters and incredible songwriters, Marty Kaniger and Dan Peyton for this one! We are so grateful!

Hop on the bus, last bend!

YOU are all so amazing. THANK YOU.

Last night I sat on my computer planning the final offer I was going to put up for the campaign. Suddenly I found myself engaged in watching the numbers move, slowly but steadily,  almost moment by moment. It became very exciting.

Other than the last month, I have not been one to engage is social media very much. But there I was, completely captivated. I was watching friends of mine who I haven't seen since High School  coming on to my backer list. Friends from my young childhood neighborhood, my community and neighboring communities, to my current neighborhood. I started thinking about the others who have come on through the month--friends from my film days, my theatre days, my airline days, even my young days from my very first job in fast food!  My college life-guarding days, days of summer stock, and post-college days when we made our gritty, low-budget independent films in Cleveland,  Boston and Dallas. To my surprise I watched some of those great songwriters and singers, musicians, producers and performers who I interviewed for this book--and expected nothing more from--coming on board to back us. And then there are all of those impassioned Partridge Family and David Cassidy fans who, like me, have wanted a book about this music for a very, very long time.  You were there.

All of you  are testament to what can be accomplished when people work together and pull together. In the big scheme of life, our little book is just a spec. But it's an important spec to us, and to all those Partridge Family and David Cassidy fans that just want to celebrate and bring credibility to a body of music that has deserved it for 45 years. This music is as important to music history, TV history, and our own quiet solitude at the end of the day, as anything else in life that brings a little contentment.

You are part of making something happen that will live on in the libraries of music history long past our time together on this earth. You have made something possible that does the world a little good--you are making people happy.

Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart to my mangled fingers that have been typing non-stop for thirty days, to my six ulcers that I'd like to think are temporary to the month of May. Now on to the next phase.

Since we still have two days left (finishing at 10PM Sunday), I am going to put up the final photo offer from Henry Diltz and also make the previous photos available again-along with a few other surprises. Anything that comes in from this point forward will go towards increasing the production level of photos and photo pages planned for the book, as well as tossing some money toward the professionals who donated their time to this book, simply because of  the music.

"There's nothing better than bein' together.." ..right? ..."WHEN WE'RE SINGIN'."  (yeah, I know, I know... I couldn't resist!)

"Stephanie" & "All of The Things" Special Story, Special Bundles!

1970s, Announcements, David Cassidy, David Cassidy Concerts, Kickstarter, Partridge Family Music, Partridge Family TV Show, Screen Gems RecordsJohn Miller1 Comment

Songwriter David Price was involved in writing both "Stephanie" and "All of The Things" recorded by The Partridge Family. The stories behind these two particular Partridge Family songs are priceless, but the very special, poignant story behind David Price and what he did for our campaign is even more heart-warming.

While I was preparing for the campaign to publish "When We're Singin," I asked several of the songwriters  to contribute signed items to our rewards packages. I thought it would be exciting to include a few items that highlighted some of the un-released songs, since many of them are fan favorites, so I approached David Price. I asked him if he would consider hand-writing the lyrics for each of his two songs to be offered as exclusive, one-of-a-kind rewards items.

He told me that he was suffering from Parkinson's disease, and that his hands shake a lot. Before he could say another word, I expressed my heartfelt apologies for having asked him to do this, as I obviously didn't know of his condition.

He immediately jumped back in to the conversation to complete his original thought. He told me that he really wanted to do this. He wanted to hand-write those lyrics. He asked me if I was in a hurry because it would take him some time. He was insistent. Not only did he want to hand-write the lyrics, but he wanted to sign the lyric commemoratives, too. He was so flattered to learn that after all these years, fans still really love this music.

So a few months went by, and the hand-written lyrics came in the mail. I couldn't have been more touched. I initially put the lyrics up at $250.00 each but listed the commemoratives separately. I am combining them into two very special packages. The "Stephanie" bundle now includes the one and only hand-written lyric by David Price AND a "Stephanie" lyric commemorative, also signed by Price. You will also get a signed copy of the book, with a souvenir bookmark to go with it and your name published on the website and in the book as a backer of the campaign. "All of The Things" is also repackaged the same way.   There is only ONE of each, and are true collector's items. Each Bundle is $250 ($220 without the book.)

Thanks David, for your great heart in supporting "When We're Singin'!" We are forever grateful. http://kck.st/1DSL7zP

We have ten days left, gang, to reach our funding goal and publish the new book, "When We're Singin' - The Partridge Family and Their Music." And it is up to YOU to make it happen!

If you have been waiting for the perfect time to get on the bus, that time is NOW! Don't wait one more second! It is you, the fans, who will make this happen.

In the past 20 days we have welcomed backers from all walks of life.  We have life-long fans, casual fans, fan club presidents, doctors, lawyers, nurses, journalists, musicians, teachers, and even college professors! We have fans backing us from the U.S., Canada, Germany, Australia, the U.K., New Zealand and more!

We have businesses who have backed us and reputable music industry professionals, too! Denny Tedesco, filmmaker of the Award-Winning "Wrecking Crew" documentary has said "YES!" Beverly Weinstein, former V.P. at Bell Records has said "YES!" The prestigious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum, Library and Archives has said "YES!" That means they have pledged to this campaign! It is now your turn to speak.

In the past few months, hundreds of David Cassidy fans (including myself) have signed a petition to get David recognized by The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And now,  the HOF has said 'YES" to the publication of "When We're Singin' - The Partridge Family and Their Music." How are YOU going to respond? 'The Wrecking Crew' Filmmaker Denny Tedesco is a Backer!

The campaign to publish "When We're Singin'" has now earned the backing of Denny Tedesco, filmmaker of the award-winning documentary, "The Wrecking Crew."

The critically acclaimed "The Wrecking Crew," tells the story of the session musicians who worked around the clock playing on thousands of records during the '60s and '70s. These players were the best of the best, and they were intrinsic to the creation of a sound for such acts as The Mamas and The Papas, Sonny & Cher, the Carpenters, and yes--The Partridge Family!

In fact, Denny Tedesco's father, Tommy Tedesco, was one of the lead guitar players for The Partridge Family, and Denny provides commentary in "When We're Singin'" about his young memories of the Partridge Family music!

Denny's "The Wrecking Crew" was finally  given distribution after a successful  campaign on Kickstarter in 2013 that garnered Denny the final funding needed to pay off expensive music licensing fees.

Denny has been a friend to "When We're Singin'" since the beginning of the project's development. He was the guy who connected me to the session players--the great Hal Blaine, Max Bennett, Louie Sheldon, and Joe Osborn to name only a few.

With Denny on board the Partridge Family bus, it's time for you to join us in making "When We're Singin'" a published reality! C'mon Partridge Family fans! Board the bus NOW! There's only 12 days left!
